Every year since the unveiling of the First National memorial of the Arandora Star in Wales at St. David's Metropolitan Cathedral in in Cardiff on 2nd July 2010, a commemorative mass is celebrated to remember and honour the 53 Italians from Wales who died in this WW2 tragedy.
This year marks 100 years since the foundation of the diocese and the Annual mass was celebrated by Archbishop George Stack in the context of the centenary celebrations, acknowledging the contribution of the Italian community to Welsh society and to the diocese. For the occasion, the cathedral was embellished with a beautiful array of flower compositions, partly sponsored by the Welsh-Italian community. Piero Mattei, former Royal Opera House singer, 82 years old with a stunning voice, sung the Ave Maria, a composition by his wife Francesca. Piero's father died on the Arandora Star.
The event was as ever very well attended by members of the Italian community and relatives of the victims, including former members of the Arandora Star Memorial Fund in Wales.
